You’ve heard the saying before: trust your gut. This, of course, relates to being intuitive and making decisions that feels right.

But what if your gut can’t trust YOU?

Gut health, a rising trend in the wellness world, is critical. How you’re treating your gut, ie: what you’re putting in to it, dictates so much of how you feel – it is your “second brain,” after all. The better you treat it, the better it will work – and so will the rest of your body.

At Dr. Gena Chiropractic, a leading Plantation family chiropractor, we make it our mission to educate our patients on all things wellness. Owner and founder, Dr. Gena Bofshever, can’t stress enough the importance of a healthy gut. When your gut works well, so does the rest of your body, helping your immune system to keep you strong and even ensuring you sleep more restfully and feel clearer mentally.

Which leads us back to that “second brain” thing again for a second:

Your gut is your "second brain" and will ultimately determine how healthy/strong your immune system is,” Dr. Gena says. And if you’ve ever taken antibiotics before and had someone remind you to take your probiotics, it’s because antibiotics kill the bacteria in your gut; including the bacteria that is actually good for us!

It's normal for bacteria to live in our gut. We always want the healthy bacteria to outweigh the unhealthy bacteria (ex: bacterial infection) we may have living within us.”

Poor gut health, as in a gut that is not receiving the right nutrients to keep it healthy, has been linked to:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Health Issues
  • Mental Illness

So how do you keep your gut healthy? Easy!

Diet

According to this article in Rally Health, there are some surprisingly dangerous foods for your gut. These include, you guessed it, artificial sugars, high saturated fats, alcohol, and too much red meat. While we know these foods to be unhealthy for all parts of our body, they are especially harmful to gut health because they promote the growth of bad bacteria, eventually outweighing the good.

The list of foods that are good for your gut seems to be endless, however, so that’s the good news! These foods include:

  • Yogurt (hello, probiotics!)
  • Artichoke
  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Barley
  • Cacao
  • Wheat Bran
  • Garlic
  • Kimchi

Fermented Foods

Kimchi, a fermented cabbage famous in Eastern diets, could be the poster child for good gut health. ALL fermented foods offer a benefit to our guts that no other food can. Fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha and even tempeh “alters the bacterial environment of the gut, potentially reducing the risk of insulin resistance, obesity, and blood pressure.”

Regular Chiropractic Care

When you think of chiropractic care, you may not automatically think of the benefits it can have on your gut. The two ARE related, however, and according to Dr. Gena, “chiropractic fits into the topic of gut health because it affects the brain-body connection (by removing subluxations).”

As subluxations, or interferences, are removed, all parts of your body begin to function better – even your gut.
