You abide by a pretty consistent clean-eating routine. You’ve shunned processed foods, inflammatory ingredients, and have fallen in love with the feeling that eating “well” brings. Well, that’s all wonderful - but what if we told you that even the healthiest of eaters may be lacking some pretty critical nutrients?

It’s true. More often than not, someone can be deficient in one particular nutrient and not even know it.

At Dr. Gena Chiropractic, we believe in a completely well-rounded approach to living a healthy lifestyle. Beyond family chiropractic care in Plantation, we want to ensure you know all of the facts about keeping yourself fit as a fiddle from the inside out.

So, why are we worried about your nutrient intake?

According to this article in Healthline, “A nutritional deficiency occurs when the body doesn't absorb or get from food the necessary amount of a nutrient. Deficiencies can lead to a variety of health problems.”

These problems can include what we call the 4 D’s of nutrient deficiencies:

Digestion problems
Disorders of the skin
Defective bone growth
Dementia

To avoid these and ensure that you get all of the most important nutrients, here’s a helpful list of the most common nutrient deficiencies and how you can avoid them.

Iron Deficiency
You’ve likely heard of someone who is anemic, or who has mentioned that they have issues with iron deficiency. But you know those red blood cells - the incredibly important ones responsible for binding with hemoglobin and transporting oxygen to your cells? Without enough iron, they just can’t function properly, leaving you feeling completely exhausted and mentally foggy.

To avoid being one of the 25% of Americans suffering from iron deficiency, you can start including the following foods and supplements to your diet:
Red meat
Canned sardines
Beans
Seeds
Dark, leafy greens
Vitamin C, which will enhance the absorption of iron into your blood-stream

Vitamin D Deficiency
Hard to believe that even in the Sunshine State, we can still be missing that essential vitamin D from our diets. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that functions like a steroid hormone in your body. It travels through your bloodstream and into cells, telling them to turn genes on or off. Almost every cell in your body has a receptor for vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced from cholesterol in your skin upon exposure to sunlight and the almost 45% of people deficient in Vitamin D may experience muscle weakness, bone loss, and an increased risk of fractures.

How can you avoid this and get some much needed Vitamin D in your body?

Eggs, and keep the yolks. The yolks contain 7% of the DV.
Fatty fish like salmon, sardines and trout
Cod liver oil supplements

Magnesium Deficiency
Magnesium is to your body what a strong foundation is to a house - essential, and HALF of us are not getting enough of it! Magnesium aids in keeping our bones and teeth strong and a lack of it can result in several conditions, including type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and osteoporosis.

To ensure you’re keeping your foundation strong and full of magnesium, make sure to include the following healthy (and super delicious) items into your diet!

Whole grains
Nuts
Dark chocolate
Dark green, leafy vegetables

Worried you’re not eating enough of the above listed foods? You can supplement these necessary nutrients in your diet. At Dr. Gena Chiropractic, we carry the Designs For Health product line and they have all of these important nutrients and more.
