When you think of back pain, chances are you think of going to see your chiropractor. The most common response I get from people, upon introducing myself as a chiropractor, is "I have this pain in my neck..." Many people will say that they've always wanted to check chiropractic out, but that their body is "good" right now. Well, how exactly do you determine if your body is good? Are we to assume that the only way in which your body could be "bad", would be due to pain?

Take John, for example. He is a healthy, marathon running, clean eating,pain-free, happy 40 year old man, who seemed to be "good". That is, of course, until he dropped dead from a heart attack upon waking one morning. Now, I'm not saying that chiropractic care will keep you from suffering from heart disease. But what I am hoping for is that we take a step back and look a the bigger picture when it comes to our health. Is there anything else John could have been doing to prevent this unfortunate incident?

Picture a straight, horizontal line in your head. Place health on one end and dis-ease on the other side of the continuum (dis-ease --------------------------------------- health). Think about where you fall on this well-being spectrum. As you continually make healthier choices, you move towards greater health. If you only made one more healthy choice than you did the day before, you'd be moving in the right direction. The choices you make in regards to your diet, exercise routine, sleep schedule, thoughts you think and your nervous system, effect how "good" you are.

You'd be happy to learn that this doesn't require tons of sacrifice and discipline to start! I'm a big fan of the add in approach, versus taking away. You don't have to become a Paleo eating, Crossfitter tomorrow morning. You can still eat your bacon cheeseburger (bun included), as long as you add a salad to your meal and park just a few spots farther away from your office door, to start. As you start feeling better, you'll slowly be more inclined to make other healthier choices. I challenge you to add in three, small "good" choices into your daily routine. In time, you'll be surprised by how much better you feel and, more importantly, how your body functions. Your future is directly affected by the choices you make today, be they big or small. You can still be "bad" as you blossom into the healthy, dynamic, "good" being you're designed to be!
