As we move further into the fall season, we find our chiropractic kiddies super excited to celebrate all of the fall festivities.

We also find that many of the children who visit us for chiropractic care are beginning to feel the effects of a compromised immune system – as the dreaded ear infection, cold, and flu-seasons set in.

Look, it happens. If your child is in day care, preschool, elementary school or just around any other children – your child will come face to face with tons of germs on a daily basis. You may find your child getting more ear infections than anything else – and this is not uncommon. First, your child will be prescribed medication for their ear infections. This will likely happen a handful of times, and after multiple rounds of antibiotics, if the ear infections continue, you’ll be faced with another more invasive option. This is around the time you’ll hear your child’s pediatrician or ENT recommend surgery to insert tubes into the ear canal, as a way to drain extra fluid and hopefully cut down on the ear infection situation. Their pain and discomfort may alarm you and you are likely going to be desperate to get them quick relief at any cost.

But stop right there, parents, and think of the bigger picture.

What if there was another option for your kids? An option that was non-invasive, involved no medication, and reduced the likelihood to need surgery?  Would you rather continue on the same path of antibiotic use or get right to the source of what could be causing the illness?

We’re going to assume you chose the latter – and applaud you.

Because at Dr. Gena Chiropractic, a leading family chiropractor in South Florida, we pride ourselves on helping to boost immune function in kids and cutting down on sick days at school. We understand the very real connection between removing interference in your child’s body and helping them to feel better in an all-natural, drug-free, and surgery-free way.

So how do chiropractic care and ear infections relate to one another?

Chiropractic adjustments help reduce interference that may exist between the brain-body connection (including the cranial nerves affecting eyes, ears, nose, and throat), therefore allowing the child's body to best heal, feel, adapt, and function. This can translate to improved overall immune function and thus, less occurrences of ear infections,” Dr. Gena explains.

Okay, okay, I know what you’re thinking. Will chiropractic care hurt my child?

No way! With Dr. Gena’s gentle touch and incredibly engaging sense of humor and energy, your child will be more excited for their chiropractic adjustment than the sticker and hug they’ll likely receive at the end of their appointment.

Through gentle chiropractic adjustments, mostly focusing on the upper cervical area; their bodies are better able to adapt and function. The upper cervical area also has a direct relation to the cranial nerves which are responsible for the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. This means applying pressure during an adjustment in the same manner you’d check for a ripe tomato at the super market – pressing gently and applying a careful touch.

According to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, a case study discussing the existence of persistent ear infections in a child who was scheduled for a second surgery to insert tympanostomy tubes in his ears brought to light some incredible research. Before his second surgery, his mother took him to a chiropractor to find a less-invasive alternative instead of putting her child through yet another traumatic surgical experience. The chiropractor found, upon examining the patient’s spine, misalignments where the spine and cranium (head) meet and in the patient’s lower spine.  At the patient’s first visit, he was adjusted with the Activator instrument The Activator is a small hand-held instrument that delivers a gentle impulse force to the spine in order to restore motion in the specific area of the spine.

And do you know what happened after the first two visits?

The patient’s mother said that her son stopped tugging on his ears and his nose stopped running. By the third visit, his mother had cancelled the surgery that had been scheduled.

And these are the kinds of success stories we live for and work for - every single day.
