Be sure that the things you are doing put a smile on your face and make you feel happy and fulfilled. Don’t let stress and anxiety keep you down, and most importantly — listen to your body. If you are feeling run down, don’t overextend yourself and your energy. The most important thing to remember is consistency. Whatever healthy choices you decide to make this year (and beyond), it’s crucial that you stick to them. You’re all familiar with the adage of those who make a New Year’s resolution to get in shape, only to join a gym in January and cancel, forget about the membership, or just stop going a month later. Don’t be that person! If your goal is to work out more, start out by making a smart goal — one that is attainable and you know you can achieve. For example, make a commitment to yourself to start your new fitness routine with two exercise sessions per week, versus every day, which might not be the most realistic regimen. Another good idea is to sign up for fitness classes or work out with a trainer or a friend, that way you are being held accountable by others for your workouts. 

While it might be in many of our nature to put others first, especially our loved ones, this is not always good for the mind, body and soul. It’s important to take time out for yourself. Schedule “me time” and “self care” into your calendar. Make it a priority! Take a bath with essential oils and/or epsom salts, get a massage or a facial at your favorite spa, take a yoga class to stretch and unwind, discover a new hobby like music or art, spend more time outside in nature… Do things for you. This doesn’t mean ignoring your friends and family members; it simply means that by making time for yourself, your mood and energy levels will be enhanced so that when you do spend quality time with your loved ones, you will be able to appreciate and enjoy it so much more.
