What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.

Buddha was certainly on to something when he spoke these now world-famous words. At the time, he may not have known that this phrase would one day be emblazoned on bumper stickers, notebooks, candles, tee shirts and on Yoga studio walls across the planet – but it is, and for good reason.

At Dr. Gena Chiropractic, a leading family chiropractor in Planation, Florida, these are words we believe in. Why? Because when Buddha uttered these words, he was talking about the mind-body connection – one of the most powerful combinations since wise words and laptop stickers.

The mind-body connection, by definition, is the idea that our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our biological functioning. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy or a learned helplessness, harboring on the negative in our minds, will result in our bodies responding loudly.

And it makes total sense if you think about it. Your brain is the flight center for your body. If your brain is feeling or thinking poorly, your body will have to respond in the same way. Your thoughts literally become how you feel.

When you’re more stressed than usual, you’ll often find yourself with a debilitating tension headache. When you’re nervous or worried, you’ll find yourself with stomach upset or the inability to eat. When you’re sad, your body will respond with an overwhelming need to curl up into a ball and sleep.

It’s science.

The best way to make sure your brain sends only happy, energetic, uplifting signals to your body is to, well, keep a positive mindset. But in this day and age, that’s hard to do. We’re busy, overworked, overbooked and overcommitted. Trying to stay positive has literally become a job for some of us, an exercise routine for others, and almost impossible for some.

But being happy, has much more powerful effects than you realize.

According to this Healthline article, being happier doesn’t just make you feel better — it actually brings a host of potential health benefits, including:

  • A stronger immune system
  • Lower risk of heart disease
  • Lower risk of premature death
  • And may even protect against stroke.

But how do we get happier, and strengthen our mind-body connection in a positive way?

You take care of you – that’s how.

“Prioritizing self-care and knowing when to take a time out for yourself is critical,” Dr. Gena says. “Letting yourself burn out will be detrimental to your physical and emotional well-being. Be proactive and keep your mind-body connection in check by finding time to do things that make you feel good, amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life.”

Dr. Gena Chiropractic’s favorite ways to stay positive and keep your brain sending happy signals to the body?

Exercise:

You don’t need a whole lot of it to relax your mind and pep up your body! Take a brisk walk after dinner, go dancing with friends, or pop-in a fun workout video once the kids go to bed a few times per week to remind your body just how strong and energetic it can be.

Meditate:

Just a few minutes per day is enough to center your thoughts and put your mind at ease. With so many apps dedicated to helping you tune out, practice meditating when you first wake up and gradually increase to a few 5-minute sessions per day, especially when you feel extra tense or stressed.

Eat Well:

If what you think, you become, then you totally are what you eat. You have to eat well to feel well. Load up on antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies each and every day to keep your gut AND your brain in good-working order.

Make Your Spinal Health a Priority:

Regular chiropractic visits are a great way to improve the mind-body connection. Chiropractic care is not just about neck and back pain! Consistent adjustments reduce the number of subluxations (interferences) in your nervous system, lowering stress and helping you to function and feel better each and every day!
