As a new mom, there is no doubt that you do everything in your power to keep your child healthy, safe, and happy. But from time to time, there are ailments that can sneak up when you least expect it, leaving both your baby, and you, feeling uncomfortable and desperate for relief.
Ear infections in children and colic in babies.
At Dr. Gena Chiropractic, everyone’s favorite family chiropractor in Plantation, we see our fair share of parents who are ready to try chiropractic care for ear infections. We also get many visits from parents who are seeking relief for their babies from a common newborn ailment and are in need of chiropractic care for colic. Colic, a major fear for most parents, often shows up when a baby is 2 or 3 weeks old (or two or three weeks after his due date if he's a preemie). It is most often associated with a baby’s gassy tummy which results in hours of crying for days, and sometimes, weeks on end. It does not mean your baby is unhealthy necessarily, but it certainly means your child is uncomfortable.

This is why we feel grateful every day to be able to provide much-needed relief for families to live healthier, happier lives.
But how does chiropractic care work for these two common pediatric issues?
We went straight to the source and asked Dr. Gena Bofshever, DC, owner and founder of Dr. Gena Chiropractic.
“The number one thing we have to take a look at is what is happening with the nervous system. The nervous system is essentially the computer operating system for the body. It's made up of the brain and spinal cord and the ability to transmit signals clearly to all of the parts of the body (even the ones that don't hurt yet)! When it comes to ear infections, in particular, we want to focus on the upper cervical area. That's the part of the spine closest to the skull/ - at the top of the neck. Inside of those top bones is part of the brain stem and in there you will find the cranial nerves. That is what affects the eyes, ears, nose and throat. If the brain experiences trouble in transmitting signals (what we refer to as a subluxation) then there can be a break down or dis-connect in the way the body functions. While chiropractic is not a treatment for ear infections, it helps clear up the communication between the brain and the organs, allowing your child’s body to best heal, feel, adapt and function on its own!”
Many times, parents call Dr. Gena Chiropractic after feeling fed up that several rounds of antibiotics have been given to their child, but the problem keeps returning. While antibiotics may help to clear up the problem in the short-term sense, utilizing chiropractic care helps to get to the root cause of the ear infection issue.
And when it comes to finding ways to relieve colic, this is when Dr. Gena feels proudest to have years of training in working with newborns.
“Colic works similarly in that the nervous system connection needs to be clear (after getting bogged down by stresses: chemical, physical, and emotional) and it is also important to be mindful of having healthy bacteria in the gut/body. This will also tie into constipation and many other digestive issues that can be keeping your babies and kids from calming down due to pain, reflux, gassiness, etc.”
The bottom line?
Adjustments help restore proper flow in the body (from the brain down) and from the inside out so that your babies and kids can do what they do best!
When it comes to family chiropractic care that leaves you feeling safe and healthy, Dr. Gena Chiropractic, located just minutes west of Fort Lauderdale, is a favorite for so many. We hope you’ll make it yours as well in the new year!
