At Dr. Gena Chiropractic, a leader in chiropractic care in Plantation – there are a few health musts that we preach day in and day out.

We want you to live your best, healthiest and most joyful life – and this can certainly be achieved by paying attention to how you treat your body, and making sure you’re giving it some of the most basic goodness out there…

And it all starts with water!

As reported in mindbodygreen, our bodies are over two-thirds water. Even our bones are composed of more than 20% water! Water is needed to transport all the nutrients, hormones and even wastes through our bodies, so it’s important to avoid dehydration, an often overlooked aspect of disease. According to the author of the book Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, “You’re not sick, you’re thirsty!”

The truth is, most of us are dehydrated and we don’t even know it.

Being hydrated is the foundation for what your body needs to survive – almost like the main ingredient in a delicious recipe. You simply cannot survive without water, and it is the solvent for your body’s biochemical reactions. With the hot, Florida summer upon us, it’s important to understand how critical being hydrated is for your overall health, and how it can affect your body in many ways that you may not have even realized!

Hunger

Hunger pains are real. But sometimes, that strong desire to head to your nearest refrigerator are really thirst pains in disguise. When you do not drink enough water, your body receives mixed signals on hunger. Dehydration can cause you to believe you need to eat when you really need liquid intake. One small tip – next time you think you’re hungry, drink a full glass of water instead. This should tell you whether or not your brain was playing thirst-tricks on you!

Allergies and Asthma

Another little known fact about dehydration is that its directly linked to both allergies and asthma. When the body is dehydrated, histamine begins to ration water, which in turn increases histamine and the allergic response and lowered immunity. If this situation becomes chronic and you are consistently without water, you are opening up the doors to breathing problems like asthma.

Exhaustion

Feeling like you could use a nap? Before you pour yourself another cup of coffee, chug some water! In a study conducted by Loughborough University, evidence proved that even a 5% drop in water levels in the body can cause a 25-30% loss in energy. The teeniest 3% drop can cause that sluggish, “brain fog” feeling – and quickly slow down your metabolism! Since caffeine is known to dehydrate your system, go for water instead, either before your morning coffee, or consistently throughout the day to avoid the afternoon slump.

And now for the million dollar question – how much water should you be taking in on a daily basis?

Simply – just divide your body weight by two, and voila, that’s exactly how many ounces of water your body needs to stay hydrated, healthy, and ready to thrive!
