Just as we have shared that chiropractic care is incredibly helpful for women while trying to conceive (TTC) and during their pregnancy in this earlier blog post, it is also an important part of post-childbirth health and wellness.

After giving birth to your little miracle, regardless of whether it’s your first, your third, or your sixth time… life does not go back to your pre-pregnancy “normal.” New moms are faced with increased stress as they get acclimated to this new lifestyle, taking care of a brand new human being (#momlife). Along with this also comes lack of quality sleep and that self-care “me time” that is so important for a woman’s overall well-being.

All of these things cause stress on the nervous system, and when the nervous system is under increased stress of any kind — chemical, physical, or emotional — it has an effect on how well the body functions, and in turn, how the body feels. The body experiences all three of these stressors during the process of childbirth and even more so afterward. Chemically, because hormones are changing at a rapid pace along with chemical exposures that can happen from certain inductions or a cesarean section. Physically, because of the new movements and motions such as holding the baby, feeding them (both bottle or breast), and tending to their every need. Emotionally, because of the new stress one feels when they become a new parent. The weight of all of this stress has an affect on new moms (and dads), both physically and mentally.

Many times, patients come to see Dr. Gena, a family chiropractor in Plantation, and her team because of complaints due to neck and upper back pain, especially as they are getting used to either breastfeeding or bottle feeding. The posture needed to execute either of these actions is not something the body is particularly used to. Another complaint is lower back pain, due to the amount of times they are bending over to pick up their newborn out of a bassinet, or leaning over to change a diaper. Again, these are positions that the body is not accustomed to doing so often, and the neck and back unfortunately get the brunt of it. New parents often don’t have the best ergonomics when performing these daily care taking tasks for their little ones.

Performing proper ergonomics in these situations is important as new mamas take care of their babies — and themselves. Chiropractic care can help with this, and help the body relax and be more at ease, so that you feel and function better.

At Dr. Gena Chiropractic, we specialize in taking care of families as a whole — from the time mom and dad begin trying to conceive, throughout the duration of pregnancy, and then once baby is born and mom needs a little extra love and care as her body goes through the healing process (the fourth trimester). At this point, Dr. Gena and her team are even experienced and qualified to provide pediatric chiropractic care for the infant as well. Our doctors have extra training in and a passion for pediatric and perinatal care.

We are Plantation’s favorite family-focused chiropractic office for a reason. Give us a call today at 954-417-5815 to schedule appointments for the whole family. Remember, your health is in your hands; our hands are here to help.
