October is filled with observance days that focus on aspects of the body that chiropractic care is all about: the joints and spine. The week of October 12-20 has been named Bone and Joint Action Week by the United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) and the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health. Each year, this week is dedicated to raising awareness about research, resources, prevention, management and treatment for conditions such as arthritis, back pain, trauma, pediatric conditions, and osteoporosis.

Conditions that affect the bones and joints are known as musculoskeletal, and they are some of the most common ailments that people experience. According to the USBJI, over half of American adults suffer from musculoskeletal conditions.

The concept behind Bone and Joint Action Week resonates with us here at Dr. Gena Chiropractic, your favorite family Chiropractors in and around Plantation, since these neuro-musculoskeletal conditions can be addressed with chiropractic care.

Quality of life can be severely affected if a bone and/or joint condition persists and goes untreated. Aside from the obvious physical constraints it can put on your day-to-daily, there are emotional and mental stressors that can occur as well. Your sleep pattern, your mood, your ability to relax or be productive at work, your overall happiness… Having chronic pain can really take a toll on all of these things. The team at Dr. Gena Chiropractic has experience caring for patients for these kinds of bone and joint conditions, and believes that chiropractic care can make a huge difference in the management and recovery process.

Within Bone and Joint Action Week, there are also individual observance days for some of the most common types of musculoskeletal conditions:

  • October 12th: World Arthritis Day. Chiropractic care can be especially helpful for hip and knee osteoarthritis. It can help reduce inflammation, improve joint functioning, reduce pain, and strengthen the muscles around the affected joints.

  • October 17th: World Trauma Day. This refers to trauma in the form of a fall or accident that causes musculoskeletal damage. Body pain and/or injuries following a fall or automobile accident are very common scenarios for which we see patients.

  • October 20th: World Osteoporosis Day. Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease — which is not something that chiropractic care specifically treats. This disease affects bone tissue and structure, and the most effective way to counter it is with proper nutrition and adequate strength training. While chiropractic care does not necessarily treat Osteoporosis directly, it does address neuro-spinal misalignment and that can optimize the strength and functioning of the nervous system, which allows the body to properly use exercise and nutrition to keep bones healthy and strong. “When we adjust patients who have osteopenia and/or osteoporosis, we just low-force techniques and instruments that respect the bony integrity of each individual’s body,” Dr Gena says.

Also happening during Bone and Joint Action Week is World Spine Day on October 16th. The spine is an incredibly important part of the body. It allows us to stand up straight, to sit and lie down properly, to bend and flex freely, and basically move our bodies when we want, how we want. Our spine (and skull) protects our MOST important areas in the body – the brain and spinal cord. Without it, our bodies would have no structure or support at all. Spine health is important, and following a frequent chiropractic care schedule is one of the best ways to achieve that.

World Pediatric Bone and Joint (PB&J) Day is observed on October 19th. This is something we feel very strongly about at Dr. Gena Chiropractic, since we see a lot of children, of all ages, in our office. Our team has extra training in and a passion for pediatrics, and we take great care in making sure children are always comfortable on the table. That means gentler techniques and a softer approach to ensure that their bones, nervous system and joints are handled properly.

Join the Dr. Gena Chiropractic team in observing Bone and Joint Action Week this October. If you are currently suffering from a musculoskeletal condition or have a family history of any of the conditions mentioned, it’s not too late to see a chiropractor.
